I will, without hesitation, use plain text files. About 90% of the documentation I write is plain text. The more plain text there is, the better.

Aside from a browser and an email client, the must-have apps on any Mac are those found in an office suite. TextEdit is fine for tapping out quick notes to the milkman, but you need a more weighty solution for complex business documents. The same can be said of quick sums: Spotlight provides a rudimentary calculator, but falls short when it comes to the family finances. In your workplace, a comprehensive business bundle is less a luxury and more a necessity, but which one you settle on depends on what you need to do. It's like trying to choose between a smartphone, a tablet and a Mac as your daily working platform. Each has benefits, but are communications options and portability, for example, as vital for you as data storage space or sheer computing muscle?

By keeping all of your documents from Pages, Numbers, and Keynote saved in iCloud, you can work on them from any computer connected to the internet. You can even work on them from your iPhone, or non-Apple devices via. Having access to mobile versions of these apps is also a big benefit. You can use Microsoft Office for free on your 9.7″ iPad, but on a Mac it requires an Office 365 subscription. Apple’s office productivity suite may be less powerful, but it’s also more financially viable if you don’t need all that power. The mobile versions of iWork apps are also free provided you have a recent device, and they’re well-optimized for mobile work. Even This isn’t the first thing I’ve written on an iDevice, but it’s the first time I’ve chosen to do it when I’ve had other options.

Despite continued rumors of iWork's demise, Apple does seem to be continuing to offer it. All in all, whether Office or iWork 09 is the right tool for you depends on whether you want fast food or a restaurant meal.

That's essentially everything - it copes fine with that. Word processing I often do in in TextEdit rather than NeoOffice, because it's rarely more than a coversheet or single-page letter. The only thing I've stressed NeoOffice with is opening a rather nasty frames and tables-based document originally created in Word 4, which then was moved to the PC and has been opened and resaved in every Office revision up to Office XP. Office itself now chokes on the finer details of layout, but NeoOffice copes admirably (as does AbiWord).

All of the iWork apps support multiple export formats including PDF. The best part? Create a document on your iPhone or Mac and pick up where you left off on your iPad with iCloud sync.

Use iCloud to keep your presentations up to date across all your devices. You can instantly share a presentation using just a link, giving others the latest version and the ability to edit it directly with Keynote for iCloud beta from www.icloud.com using a Mac or PC browser.

For the moment, I’ll give Adobe a free pass because Apple to apples. Allow me time to focus some light on Microsoft’s cash cow suite, Office (made up primarily of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook), and an alternative. The business world seems to thrive on documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and email, so Office for Mac (or Windows) has become a mainstream necessity. Not only has the price tag in the past been a hefty per-person, per-seat cost, which led to annual licensing or upgrade pricing, Microsoft now wants to rent Office to the unsuspecting.

IWork gets rid of a lot of this clutter in favor of a cleaner interface, which eliminates distractions and provides a more peaceful productivity environment. As with many Mac features, this contributes to When you can buy a laptop for under $500, and a Chromebook will satisfy most people's computing needs, why do people insist on spending well over $1000 on a Mac? If you’re thinking to yourself “But I always need to adjust the Style settings in Word!” then you might not be a good candidate for switching to iWork.
