If I want to test or use default Microsoft fonts on my Mac, and I own a post-2006 copy of Windows or Office, I believe I can legally use Calibri and Cambria although IANAL. This would be especially helpful when collaborating with colleagues using Office products like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

More and more of our clients are now using Apple computers. And while I love my new, there are some pretty significant barriers to working with Arabic text on a Mac. The issue is not that Apple doesn’t support Arabic language (it does). The problem is that Microsoft Office for Mac is not built to work with right-to-left languages like Arabic, Farsi, and so on.

After spending some time searching the web, I found out that this problem has been around for a long time with no solution. Writing in Arabic depends on connecting some letters. For example, to write my name I use the letters ن ا ص ر but the first two and the last two have to be connected نا صر. Microsoft Office has been always supporting arabic language in their products for Windows. They also support the language in PowerPoint for Mac. In addition to Al Bayan, Baghdad, Kufi Standard and Nadeem, (I have uninstalled DecoType Naskh so I haven’t tried), there’s Geeza Pro in standard in Mac OS X. Besides, I’ve downloaded the XWZar fonts () and they are gorgeous. Some of them are rather for Farsi, but they work great for Arabic scripting, and they all have italics, bold, and bold italics. Is a branch of the Open Office project and, while it’s not completely free, we’ve found it has the best support for Arabic which is well worth the $10-30 you will pay for a copy. It contains full-featured word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation software that is able to work with MS Office file formats. For a wide range of basic documents, this is an ideal choice. The Office clones can get problematic, however, if you are working with heavily formatted documents or doing back-and-forth revisions with someone using MS Office. Ms Office (specifically 'Word') does NOT support pasting of Right to Left (RTL) languages. The words become disjointed or are pasted in REVERSE order. I REALLY need that capability since my mother tongue (URDU) is RTL as is Arabic which is the language of Koran-- and I am doing a lot of copy pasting from Koran to Word documents. Automatic Arabic Transliteration has a built-in feature that allows automatic transliteration of the 'Arabish' way of transcribing Arabic. What this simply means is that, for example, typing 'Ahlan' will automatically replace it with أهلًا in the document and so on. I say that because the huge majority of representatives working for the Apple resellers in Egypt are well aware of the Arabization process. In fact, when they sell you a MacBook, they offer bootleg copies of all the software you can think of, and help set them up and get your new laptop to work in Arabic!
